Mumbai golf – DIY golfing in the slums of India

ESPN produced this short documentary on golfing in Mumbai that is 1 part informative and 3 parts awesome. The story frames the dichotomous nature of Old Bombay by contrasting the two very different types of golf played in the city. One type is played at prestigious clubs for the elite like the Bombay Presidency Golf Club, and the other is played in the slums with DIY clubs and narrow driving lanes between shops. The latter, slum golf, is a challenging sport filled with urban distractions and “garbage penalty strokes” – a stark contrast from the serene driving lanes and ponds at a conventional golf course.

The story tells the tale of Anil Mane’s rise from caddying and golfing in the slums to making the professional tour in India. His sponsor, Venture Capitalist Ashish Kacholia, narrates this terrific documentary.

Golf tip: no need to yell “fore”!

Planning to dash off to a warm spot this winter for a few rounds of golf? Well, if your ball is shooting toward the head of another duffer, you can comfortably keep your mouth shut. No joke: a judge has even weighed in on this.

According to the New York Court Appeals, Business Insider writes, “being hit without warning by a ‘shanked’ shot while one searches for one’s own ball reflects a commonly appreciated risk of golf.” Who knew golf was so risky?

So, take note: the next time you step onto a golf course, you’re taking your life into your own hands. Maybe it’s time to don a helmet for 18 holes?

Bermuda’s Port Royal Golf Course hosts PGA

While many people celebrate fall, there are people like me who still long for warm summer breezes. That’s why Bermuda is such a popular destination for people in the Northeast. It’s no surprise that the PGA Tour chose to have it’s Grand Slam of Golf at Bermuda’s Port Royal Golf Course. With temperatures still in the high 70s on the island and a course that rivals the best in the world, Bermuda in October is a great place to watch some of the best golfers on the tour battle it out. It doesn’t hurt that you can have a perfectly made Dark ‘n’ Stormy right at the club.

David LaHuta, an expat living in Bermuda, took a tour of Port Royal and made a pretty entertaining video of his experience. Check it out below and be sure to read his accompanying blog post. Sure beats throwing on another layer of clothes on this gray New York autumn day.
