Hyatt Hotels launches first branded credit card

Hyatt Hotel customers will soon have a new way to earn rewards. The hotel company and Chase Card Services announced the launch of Hyatt Visa credit card. Use the card once and Hyatt members will receive two nights at any Hyatt anywhere in the world, redeemable within one year.

According to the terms, the Hyatt Card will include zero foreign transaction fees, three Hyatt Gold Passport points for every US$1 spent at a Hyatt property, no blackout dates and 15% bonus points for Platinum members. The card carries an annual fee of US$75.

“To further Hyatt’s mission of providing authentic hospitality, we have made significant enhancements and adjustments to our Hyatt Gold Passport loyalty program over the past two years to make it best-in-class. The Hyatt Card is another logical step in deepening relationships with our guests and welcoming new travelers into the fold,” said John Wallis, global head of marketing and brand strategy for Hyatt, in a press release.

Arrests made in Hyatt protests

It’s been a long few days for the Hyatt. An ongoing labor dispute between the hotel’s hospitality workers union and the Hyatt Corporation resulted in demonstrations outside the Grand Hyatt San Francisco hotel last week, which turned ugly fast.

San Francisco police department arrested 150 demonstrators after they blocked Stockton Street outside the San Francisco hotel. All arrested were cited and released, but the battle wages on.

San Francisco hospitality workers have been without a contract for nearly a year as union and hotel management continue to negotiate health care benefits, pension improvement, wage increases, and the right to organize without intimidation from employers.

From the hospitality workers union Unite-Here Local 2:

“The Hyatt Corporation has repeatedly said they want workers to pay hundreds of dollars per month for family medical,” Local 2 spokeswoman Riddhi Mehta told the Guardian. “Workers have sacrificed wages for decades to keep health care, to the point that their average income is $30,000 to $35,000 per year.”

From the Hyatt:.

“They are sitting on top of $35 million that could be used to help address the overall health care plan that hasn’t been addressed in 30 years,” Hyatt spokesman Peter Hillman told the Guardian. “If there is finger pointing on profits and all that, I would ask them why they haven’t opened up that?”

Hillman said management wants to renegotiate the health care portion of the contract, but that negotiations hadn’t reached the point to make specific demands for worker contributions to the plan. Mehta told the Guardian that $35 million is in a health and welfare trust fund specifically for emergencies, like earthquakes or lockouts in which union members aren’t working enough hours to get health benefits.

Seems neither party won the recent battle, but here’s hoping it gets resolved soon.

Hyatt Regency to reopen New Orleans hotel

The Hyatt Regency New Orleans closed its doors after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, but five years later the hotel is poised for a grand reopening.

The New Orleans Hyatt was a familiar fixture during the city’s coverage of Katrina. The hotel, located near the Louisiana Superdome, suffered from water and wind damage after the hurricane. In 2007, was purchased by Poydras Properties Hotel Holdings, which includes a Hyatt subsidiary, for $32 million, setting the hotel back on a path to reopening.

According to Hyatt, the multi-million renovations will include all 1,193 rooms and 53 suites. The new restaurants include a 350-seat, full-service restaurant with private and semi private dining rooms; a 210-seat media/action bar with private and semi-private lounges; a 70-seat atrium bar; a 2,000 square-foot full service coffee bar; a 24-hour convenience store featuring fresh food items; and a 7,600 square-foot specialty restaurant.

The reopening is part of an economic development plan designed by the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission and New Orleans Downtown Development District to revitalize the New Orleans business district.
