Photo of the Day (7.11.09)

Nothing is more quintessentially San Francisco than the iconic Golden Gate Bridge — and the fact that it eclipses the moon in this stunning shot by Bay Area resident ohadby makes this photo all the more breathtaking. Add the moon’s white glimmer on the water and the sparkle of city lights in the background and he’s captured night and this place in all its glory.

We’ve been doing holiday-themed photos all week, but I couldn’t resist doing one more. Not when they look as cool as this shot of Rockefeller Center from Flickr user Bernard-SD. The lighting and perspective on this are just awesome. Does this remind anyone else of a vanishing point drawing? I also like the way this photo further emphasizes the height of the building by sandwiching it between two flagpoles.

Have any great travel photos you’ve taken during your holiday this year? Why not share them with our readers on Gadling? All you have to do is upload them to our Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just use one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Check out this great night shot of the Roman Forum by stevenduke. The Forum is one of the more surreal places you’ll visit if you go to Rome, and I think stevenduke’s photo really captures that feeling. The Forum is known as the historic heart of this Italian city – a collection of aging marble monuments that once represented the political center of the world’s greatest empire. These same columns and stones that once echoed with the voices of great emperors and philosophers now stand silent – a magnificent yet mysterious reminder of what once was.

I get that same feeling of mystery when I look this photo. It looks like stevenduke used an extra long shutter to flood this night shot with some extra light, giving it a very dramatic yet lonely feeling to it. You almost feel as though the ghost of Augustus Caesar might be walking among the ruins below.

Photo of the Day (05.27.2008)

I’m an urban girl at heart. I grew up in the city and that’s where I feel most comfortable: surrounded by blaring horns, blazing lights, people as far as the eye can see. Neon signs and the noises of strangers are seared into my psyche in a way that is inescapable.

So it goes without saying that I love night photography, particularly when it captures the lights of a busy urban nightscape. This photo of Nanjing, China by Matt Hintsa captures that perfectly. It’s a little grainy, a little blown out, but so is the city. So is any city.

Disney plans an adult “Night Kingdom”

We all know where the mind wanders when a project that includes the words “adult” and “night” is planned. Add the word “Disney” to it and the very meaning of those two words together can go for a toss.

Yes, the beans have been spilled: Disney is planning a $520 million, adult theme park called a Night Kingdom where the only ‘hand job’ on the list entails your hand doing the job of feeding a hippopotamus.

If you fancy getting more adventurous, you will be able to go spelunking, get up close and personal with lions and hyenas, or frolic with penguins. Later you can unwind from your Indiana Jones adventures with a gourmet dinner, a musical performance and, if you’re lucky, a foot-rub from the two hosts who will be looking after you the entire time. Ok, so I added the foot-rub option, but like it or not, you will have two people at your beck and call. Only 2000 people will be able to enter at a time, there will be 4000 hospitality staff in the Kingdom, and opening hours will be from 4pm-12am.

Yes, Disney has found an adult market willing to pay $300 per afternoon for all this so full plans are underway; the theme park will open its gates in 2011 in conjunction with Walt Disney’s 40th Anniversary.

Who would have thought that adults would pay a premium to have exclusive “wild” adventures in Disneyland that don’t include strippers or S&M!? Word is that the project will be officially announced next month.
