Oprah says good-bye to Chicago

Did you hear the new rumor about Oprah Winfrey? No, not that one! This one says that come 2011, her daytime talk show will leave Chicago and be based out of Los Angeles.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the big O planned on calling it quits way back in 2002, then again in 2006. At that point she renewed her syndication contracts through 2011. But now, it looks like she’ll be moving the show from national syndication to her very own OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) station.

While there’s no denying that Oprah’s success is a positive force for Chicago tourism (even those who can’t get the coveted tickets for her show will make the pilgrimage out to Harpo Studios to take a tour or shop at the Oprah Store), the daytime diva hasn’t really been all that connected with Chicago for many years. Sure, she tapes the show here, she flies in for special events, and she lobbied (unsuccessfully) for Chicago’s Olympic bid, but other than that, she doesn’t spend a whole lot of time here, preferring instead her gigantic estate in Montecito, California.

For tourists and die-hard Oprah fans, I’m sure she will be missed. For residents (especially those who had their commutes disrupted when she closed down the streets for her massive season launch party), it’s sad to lose an icon, but hey, we’ve still got the Sears Tower…..oh, wait, nevermind.

According to “entertainment insiders”, Oprah’s company will make the announcement outlining her plans to move, sometime in the next six months.

Flight attendant sues Oprah over sex allegations

A flight attendant who used to work on Oprah’s private jet is suing for more than $300,000 in damages, claiming that allegations that she had sex with the pilot are false.

The story is, as these stories usually are, convoluted and filled with he-said-she-said contradictions. The skinny is: attendant Corrine Gehrls supposedly had “sexual contact” with the pilot outside his cockpit while Oprah was napping. The other two flight attendants, Myron Gooch and Kirby Bumpus (no I’m not making these names up) narced on the amorous duo and got them fired. It’s unclear whether the incident happened while they were in the air or on the ground.

Gehrls claims Gooch and Bumpus made up the story after a personal dispute with her and the pilot. She’s also claiming favoritism because Bumpus is Oprah’s goddaughter. Why someone would hire their goddaughter to serve them roasted peanuts is a mystery.

While we here at Gadling don’t mind passing along stories of Mile High hijinks, we do ask that you don’t interfere with the flight crew while they are doing their job. Consider becoming a laviator instead.

Buy Oprah’s old clothes

As I’m pawing through warm weather clothes and putting winter clothes away, I’m casting some of them off. Eventually, they may end up on the racks at a charity store in Columbus or in a pile at a market someplace in Africa.

Oprah, though, has enough cast-off clothes that she recently opened a store in Chicago so we can buy them. We can also buy her shoes. I have maybe two pairs of shoes that I could let someone buy. Usually, by the time I get rid of shoes, no one would want them. Oprah, though, has dozens. Clothes range from things she’s worn to some that maybe hung in her closet until she decided they are a no show–except, of course, on you. They are sold in the Oprah’s Closet section of the Oprah Store in Chicago.

To capitalize on all things Oprah, the Oprah Store also has Oprah inspired items–things that a person really needs like items peddled on her Web site. The thing is, I have so many Jamie things, that if I bought an Oprah thing, my house would explode.

If you do buy Oprah’s old things, the money does go to Oprah’s charity–the Angel Network. My stuff is heading to Volunteers of America. They’ll come get it. [Listen to recent Weekend Edition story on NPR]
