This week I went aboard Virgin America’s inaugural flight from San Francisco to Toronto; and having visited Toronto only once before when I was young, I didn’t have very high expectations for Canada’s largest city. On this visit, I took the time to explore some of the outlying neighborhoods (Kensington Market) and cultural districts that really give Toronto a sense of flavor and diversity, and saw a different side that I can’t wait to visit again.

Flickr user PDPhotography has an incredible collection of photographs from Toronto that really capture the vibrance & quirks of the city. This shot was captured at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, which takes place next month from August 20th to September 6th.

You don’t need fireworks to color the sky. Sometimes Mother Nature does it for you. Whether it’s an epic storm rolling through, a breathtaking sunset or just the coming apocalypse, the sky can take on all sorts of crazy hues.

Flickr user Chris Maki captured this photograph of a pretty fantastic storm heading over the Rocky Mountains that made the sky more colorful than the suits at the Player’s Ball. It’s ominous, terrifying and just plain beautiful. Fireworks are awesome, but a good thunderstorm can give you the same goosebumps. Play Neil Diamond’s “America,” and you’re in business.

I like when people argue over who would win in a race between the Flash and Superman. Not that I’m a comic book geek, but it’s always a fun debate. It sure beats listening to people drone on about politics or religion. So, the Flash is super fast. But Superman is faster than a speeding bullet. Would it have to be a foot race? What if they use scooters? Or maybe old-school roller skates? What has most intrigued me, though, is the thought of those two superheroes on bicycles. You never see any superheroes on bicycles. Probably because no one ever taught them how to ride one. That’s sad.

However, if the Flash could ride a bike, I imagine he would look much like the guy in this picture taken by Flickr user jrodmanjr in Shanghai. Streaks of red and yellow with some sort of sleek costume modification. I still think Batman is cooler than both of them though.

Spied any superheroes during your travels? Or maybe you just have some epic travel photos? Upload your pictures to our Flickr pool and we might choose one to feature as a Photo of the Day.

Youth truly is wasted on the young. When I was a kid, I was thoroughly entertained – for hours! – by simply spinning in circles or making a funny sound. I could kill an evening catching fireflies or jumping from couch to couch while avoiding the “lava” that was the carpet. As an adult, I find myself searching for interesting restaurants, purchasing unnecessary gadgets and generally making my life more complicated than it needs to be. I miss the simplicity of childhood. I also kind of wish I was a bison. I think those two things are related.

This image of a young bison in Yellowstone National Park by Flickr user fiznatty helped be shake off my adult onset ennui and remember just how awesome childhood (and bison life) is. Do you think that if I killed and ate that little guy that I could absorb his life force? Probably not. I think that’s frowned upon anyway. Oh well. I guess I’ll just go look for fireflies.

Have you encountered a boundless spirit during your travels? Did you eat its life force? Upload your photos to our Flickr pool and we might choose one to feature as a Photo of the Day.

Even when you think the world has been completely mapped and charted, this week’s news that Afghanistan is sitting upon $1 trillion worth of minerals proves otherwise. After decades of war and a crippled economy, this could be a very positive turning point for the country. In light of this, I decided to dig up this photo from uncorneredmarket that shows some of Afghanistan’s underestimated natural beauty.

This picture was taken looking into Afghanistan from Tajikistan on the Pyanj River. The Pamir Mountains, which can be seen here, are formed by a junction in the Himalayas and are among the world’s highest mountains.
