Photo of the Day (10.24.09)

Talk about a gorgeous sunset! I must have said this before, but I’ll say it again: I love Hawaii. I’m almost positive this photo’s been enhanced, but I have to say sunsets in Hawaii actually look like this all the time. Really.

Today’s photo comes to use from arbpdx1, who has a really great photostream on Flickr, complete with family and travel photos. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

There are some photographs that are the stuff from which novels are made–or if not a novel, a mighty fine short story–possibly written by Annie Proulx or Alice Monro. This stunning shot taken in Maine by justin fain is one of them. There’s a moody quality to the lighting and the colors that immediately drew me into the scene. Although the shot is absent of people, except for the lone boat in the distance, their presence is felt.

The question is, would the story be a romance or a horror story? Would anyone be killed? Is the person who lives here waiting for someone who is lost at sea? Is there a happy ending? Oh, I hope so.

If you have a shot that’s captured your imagination, send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool to capture ours. It might be chosen as a Photo of the Day.

*I think the lighthouse in the photo is the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, near Portland.

Today’s beautiful Photo of the Day comes from Flickr user jrodmanjr. It’s an interesting composition – the lush green hills in contrast against icy cliffs and sky, separated by a thin formation of low clouds. Having never been to Switzerland, this is exactly the scene that I visualize when I imagine the stereotypical beauty of the country.

The shot was taken in Grindelwald, Switzerland (pop. 3,760) – which is a popular destination for winter sports and summer hiking. A starting point for ascents of the Eiger (featured in the photo) and Wetterhorn mountains, the town has an elevation of 1,034m. Another reason you might recognize it? It was used as the basis for the view of Alderaan in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

I’ve said it several times, and I will say it again: Myanmar is a beautiful place. Go there.

The Burmese people are some of the most earnest people I’ve met on my travels. Despite the continued political strife in the country and the devastating cyclone that swept through the coast over a year ago, Myanmar is among the world’s unique and well-preserved places.

This photo of two young female monks comes to us from our dedicated reader, Lady Expat, who now calls southeast Asia her home. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

This photo of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco is a reminder to look at a subject from various angles in order to find that unusual shot. This building demands notice like a several-tiered wedding cake with florets, fluting and flower petals that have been hand rendered from rich butter cream frosting.

What I enjoy about jrodmanjr’s angle is the way that the two female statues are the main subjects. They look as if they are gazing down at whatever is going on beneath them–and no matter what the action might be, they will remain calm and interested– possibly forever.

If you have a shot to share, please send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool. It might be chosen as a Photo of the Day. We always love looking at the world through your viewpoint.
