Photo of the Day (9-23-09)

The person riding his bike in this swirl of energy is in Basel, Switzerland navigating the city’s rush hour traffic. Photographer jrodmanjr was on his bike as well and expressed amazement that riders could navigate Basel’s rain slick pavement with such finesse.

If you’ve captured images of energy and amazement, send them our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool. Images of stillness capture our fancy as well.

Nothing compares to the sunsets in Asia. At dusk every day you could expect to find me on a patio outside (preferably by the Mekong River), sipping on a local beer, and snapping photo after photo of the red glowing sun. The great thing about this photo is it appears to be naturally sepia-toned — a perfect blend of old with new.

Today’s Photo of the Day comes to us from flicts, who has traveled to such places as Vietnam, Ireland, Kiev, and Tibet. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

This photo of Annie Weaver Norton’s sink is a reminder that objects can evoke images of the people who no longer use them, as well as, provide visual interest and a slice of history. The white tones and shapes of this shot reminds me of a Louise Nevelson sculpture. Norton, also an American female artist, lived and worked in West Palm Beach, Florida where Willy Volk snapped this shot when he recently visited the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens.

At this sink, Norton felt water on her hands as she washed off tools, or perhaps rinsed off an apple–or waited for the phone to ring. This cast iron sink is exactly the kind that was in my grandparents’ basement when I was a child. It was there when they moved into their house in the 1930s.

Some events remain just as powerful and raw years later, and that is what 9/11 is to most Americans. Although I didn’t lose anyone that day, many of my friends did, and what remains for them even eight years later is a deep sense of emptiness that will always be there. I passed through Ground Zero yesterday and paid my respect to the thousands of lives lost that day. Wherever we are in the world, I hope we all take a moment if we haven’t already to remember 9/11 and remind ourselves just how precious life is.

I am intrigued by this shot for a few reasons. The subject’s movement is perfectly captured in the frame. One inch more in either direction and the visual interest would be lost. Plus there’s the action. This is a person going somewhere with a purpose in mind. Look at those boots and the outfit. Great accessories for a walk through a city or for a party–or work in a chic clothing store. That the subject is anonymous adds to the allure. The photographer also seems hidden. What I do know is that this was taken by cmvoelkel in New York City at a crosswalk and is aptly tagged, “living vicariously nyc.”

If you are living vicariously somewhere and have shots to share, send them our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool. One or more may be chosen as a Photo of the Day.
