Tickets to Germany have been on super sale for the past few weeks, as they normally are this time of the year. The problem is that most budget tickets are into Frankfurt, which hasn’t got a ton of exciting tourist attractions. Luckily, a variety of beautiful cities like Cologne are nearby, where the above picture of the Kölner Dom was taken by rafapdalbem1. Neat shot.

Who said that only landscapes can be considered as “scenery”? Gadling photographer Max Waugh (a.k.a. fiznatty) proves this theory wrong in this beautiful sky shot that he calls “Cloudscape.” He writes, “While stopping to admire the milky blue waters of Lake Pukaki, it was impossible to ignore the funky cloud patterns lingering above. The Central Otago seems like a haven for lenticular clouds, but on this day there were also these long streams of fluffy white. I was noticing hills, peaks and valleys stretching across the sky.”

As Gadling writers Jeremy and Mike continue their “In the Corner of the World” feature detailing their travels through the heart of New Zealand, it seems fitting, that this is my Photo of the Day pick. Though I’ve never been to New Zealand, this photo shows us how it is just as lovely down low as it is up high.

With today being Earth Day, images of waterfalls and green came to mind. This luscious shot by Buck Fuller is just what I was looking for. The intriguing quality, not only lies with the shades of blues, greens and grays, but also with the perspective. From seeping Mossbrae Falls water flows into the Sacramento River. I hope that it is as pristine today as it was in April 2006 when Fuller captured its loveliness.

If you have shots of lusciousness, send them our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool where one might be picked as a Photo of the Day.

I have fond memories of the DC subway system, a series of long, ovular tubes that ferry passengers through the nation’s capital. In addition to being one of the deepest metro systems on earth, the sweeping brutalist architecture in each station is an awe inspiring sight to behold — whether or not you’re an everyday metro passenger.

Today’s photo of the day is from a POTD regular, ultraclay!. Curiosity finally got the better part of me about how and where all of these magnificent photos come from, and my scouring led me to ultraclay’s very own blog over at (you guessed it) ultraclay.com. Swing by for an interesting look at food and culture from Brooklyn New York.

My Cuba Libre posts will be ending in a few days, but until they do, I feel it’s only appropriate to continue with my Cuba-themed posts! Our photo of the day comes to us from JKEvgen, who snapped this gem five years ago in Havana. This photo really captures how timeless the country and its people are, which in my opinion is one of the greatest things about Cuba. The nations bright colors, photogenic faces, and enormous cigars are still thriving today as they did fifty years ago.

As the photographer so eloquently states it, “In a country where a doctor or lawyer can expect to make the equivalent of 12 U.S. dollars per month, many Cubans of varying ages hang out in the old city center, eager to gratify a tourist’s romantic notion of a people whose day-to-day lives are anything but romantic.” Indeed, while there is something awfully romantic yet sadly realistic about Cuba and its people.
