Photo Of The Day: Black Rock Beach

Summer advances slowly. Flickr user LadyExpat (Back in Daejeon) captured this idyllic springtime scene on Black Rock Beach in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this past Wednesday.

It wasn’t always quite so lovely round these parts. Black Rock Beach, situated in Point Pleasant Park, was near the site of the public hanging of a notorious pirate in 1809. Today’s vision of the beach is not quite so violent, thankfully; it looks like a truly lovely place for a spring or summer picnic.

Have you got a great capture of the changing seasons? Sure you do. Upload it to the Gadling Group Pool on Flickr. Our favorites from the pool end up as Photos of the Day.

Video Of The Day: Time Brushing Istanbul

Recently a Turkish friend asked my daughter Vera’s middle name. It’s Alcazar, my grandmother’s maiden name from Trinidad, and more commonly known as a Moorish Spanish word for fortified palace. I was surprised to hear the response, “Oh, like the cinema?” It turns out there is an Alkazar movie theater just a few miles away from us on Istanbul‘s busy Istiklal Caddesi. Opened in the 1920s with various incarnations as a popular, adult, and art house movie theater, the Alkazar closed two years ago just before I moved here, but the facade remains. The above video by Vimeo user mustafa emre uses a “time brush” technique to show the historic building in its heyday and more recently. It’s a fun way to show how the past is just below the surface.

Photo Of The Day: Meet The Princesses

Who is the fairest of them all? It’s a tough question for guests aboard the new Disney Fantasy cruise ship, who spend their days surrounded by dozens of Disney’s famed princesses. Flickr user David Lytle is one of the lucky few to experience the Disney Fantasy first-hand, snapping today’s featured photo of Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White as they greeted guests. In addition to characters in costume, the Disney Cruise Line vessel, inaugurated in March, features art nouveau design, European-themed dining and nightlife options, and a 1,800-square-foot water play area with an AquaDuck water coaster.

Photo of the Day: Bicheno Rocks

This Photo of the Day comes from Gadling Flickr pool member BaboMike who captured the image using a Canon EOS 40D and is titled Bicheno Rocks.

Bicheno is located on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, 185 km north-east of Hobart on the Tasman Highway and is primarily a fishing port and a beach resort.

BaboMike describes this fun image as, “Besides the famous blowhole, experimenting with long exposures. I just love the silky look of the ocean.”

Play around and if you get lucky, upload your best shots to the Gadling Group Pool on Flickr. Several times a week we choose our favorite images from the pool as Photos of the Day.

Tip for getting featured: In your Flickr account, check “Privacy and Permissions,” and check “yes” on “Allow others to share your stuff.” Adding information about your image does not hurt your chances either.

Photo of the Day: Sudanese Desert Landscape

A Sudanese desert landscape like this one doesn’t materialize everyday here at Gadling. Sudan isn’t the easiest country to visit, nor the least expensive. It’s also not the very safest place to spend time as a tourist in the aggregate. Both the US State Department and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise their citizens very generally to at the very least seriously investigate the risks before visiting Sudan.

I don’t mean to make light of any of this in considering this image, snapped by Flickr user Mark Fischer in February in Ash Shamaliyah, Sudan, to be very striking. The contrast of the blue sky against the orange sand is beautifully interrupted by small, lonely buildings.

Upload your images of lonely desert landscapes to the Gadling Group Pool on Flickr. We choose our favorites from the pool as Photos of the Day.
