Photo of the Day (10.26.10)

I loved visiting airports at a very early age. There was (and will always be) something fascinating about the constant commotion, the bright colors, and overwhelmingly complex machines barreling down the tarmac. The hundreds of people walking through the airport doors; in transition, heading to exciting new destinations or returning home with stories to share.

This photograph of the ever-friendly PSA livery takes me right back to that early love for airports & travel. Appropriately titled ‘A Wink and a Smile’, Flickr user Samer Farha captured this USAirways plane taking off from National Airport on its way to La Guardia. Samer was able to snap the shot from a safe distance by using a 500mm lens and an additional doubler on a Canon 7D.

Do you love airports as much as we do? Do you have a favorite airplane livery? Share your favorite travel moments with us by submitting your photos to our Flickr Pool and it could be our next Photo of the Day.

When I was a kid, I used to beg my parents and sister to go swimming with me when we went to the beach. At the public pool, I would demand that everyone watch me jump off the high dive. Basically, I was your average little boy. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to enjoy the serenity of the beach (if I can find a beach that’s not a sea of humanity blasting house music and ignoring posted signs announcing the prohibition of glass bottles) and to avoid public pools. If you find a peaceful beach, there should be no reason to complain about anything.

This photo by Flickr user AlessandraCapricephotography of Thailand’s Maya Bay reminds me of just how blissful a day at the beach can be (and how enjoyable a good vanity shot is every now and then). If you’re thinking, “Mike, cut the BS and just admit that you selected this photo because it shows off a nice set of tanned lady legs,” well, OK, that’s exactly why I picked it. Doesn’t mean everything else I said isn’t true.

One of the quintessential photo ops for Americans traveling abroad is, as far as I’m concerned, a traffic jam caused by some kind of livestock. Sheep, cows, horses, whatever: surely you’ve either taken or seen a photo taken through a windshield, the car’s ceiling and sides framing a shot of a herd of animals moseying across a country road. While it’s not entirely obvious whether or not these giants are holding up traffic, they’re clearly on a road. Flickr user t3mujin captured this scene in Portugal.

It’s possible, of course, that Gadling Flickr pool contributor Favio@Flickr staged this photo, but it looks to me like a random slice of Roman life: a young woman eats gelato demurely, while behind her a wheatpasted poster on a wall creates a political context. The result is a fragment of a fragment of urban life, compelling in its pleasing simplicity and strongly evocative of the city and country where it was shot.

Got a suggestive image in your personal photo archive that captures a mere wisp of a city’s essence? Upload it to Gadling’s Flickr pool and we might just feature it as our Photo of the Day.

Street markets are a magical place. Various sights, smells and sounds assault your senses and you stuff your face with things you can neither pronounce nor identify. It’s easy to get lost in the excitement and energy of the market. That is, of course, until you see a tail. Americans aren’t used to seeing tails in their grocery stores or butchers. We see finished products. We buy trimmed steaks and boneless chicken breasts. We’re just not ready for the experience of seeing a boiled dog torso complete with tail.

That’s why this photo by Flickr user pirano caught my attention. At first glance, I thought that maybe it was an oddly-shaped pig. Would you believe that it’s boiled dog? After reading the blog post that went along with his photo, I learned the story about his conversation about dog meat in China. It’s worth a read if you want some background on this picture. No matter what you think about eating dog, you have to admit that seeing that tail is pretty mesmerizing.
