Photo of the Day (9.14.10)

Today’s Photo of the Day is a reminder that you don’t have to cross the globe to find adventure; although this shot could be set in the dunes of the Sahara or Namibia, it comes straight out of America’s own White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Flickr user penton42 has a great series of landscape photographs from the National Monument, with plenty of evidence that shows where the park gets its name. I picked this photo in particular because it utilizes light, shadow, and rich color to give the landscape a life of it’s own, making the two explorers seem appropriately small and insignificant.

Perhaps the first travel book that kids read is Where’s Waldo? The striped explorer travels around the globe in search of…well…nonsense, really. He encounters scenes that go beyond the imaginations of children the world over and, hopefully, inspires them to seek out their own adventures when they get older (whether he inspires them to get Lasik is up for debate).

It’s hard to go on the exact trips taken by Waldo, seeing as how he visits some far-fetched locales. However, this photo by Flickr user kwsdurango shows that you can come pretty darn close. You just need to go to a Croatian soccer futbol match. Don’t try too hard to find Waldo in the stands, though. I don’t want you to hurt yourselves.

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved eating breakfast on the road. Sure, back then it was simply because I got to experience breakfast buffets that allowed me to eat my weight in bacon, but I still have a passion for the most important meal of the day no matter where I am traveling. From cucumbers in Israel to cheeses in Turkey to beans in Australia, I’ve eaten a wide variety of foods for breakfast. But, after any length of time away from home, what I always end up craving most is a good ol’ fashioned greasy diner breakfast.

This photo by Flickr user Taylor McConnell reminded me of how much I end up craving an omelet with toast, home fries (or hash browns) and, of course, a side of (well done) bacon. As much as I love experiencing local foods when I travel, there comes a point in any trip when I just want a classic diner breakfast.

Few things are more pleasant than tooling around in a slow boat and taking in a landscape via water. This photo by Flickr user Giovanni Fusco (whose photostream captures more than a few “wow” moments) taken in Dordogne, France shows a beautiful balance of the tranquility of the river with the rocky cliffs above. Just looking at it makes you feel peaceful and tempted to hop off for a farmhouse picnic, visit to a winery, or just stay aboard and enjoy the scenery.

Seeing as it’s Labor Day, it seemed fitting to find a photo that paid tribute to the men and women all over the world who work their tails off. When we travel, we so often take countless photos of fisherman, cooks and other people who toil in conditions ranging from comfortable to downright inhumane. While we are on holiday, we glamorize the hard work of the people we observe to the point of romanticizing it. Work is work, though, and behind every exquisite photo of those tireless men and women is a story made of sweat, determination and, very often, survival.

This photo by Flickr user Michael Joseph Goldst…etc shows one such man who struck a pose, permitted a photograph and then went about his day. This man, a Uruguayan fisherman, makes for one hell of a photo subject. For him, though, it was most likely nothing more than an unusual moment on his morning walk to work.
