Photo of the Day (04.10.10)

Strolling along the shore at sunset can be magical. But is it better to be alone so that you can enjoy some quiet introspection or with someone so that the setting can help set a mood that you hope to sustain back at your house with some wine and a Barry White CD? Are sunsets best enjoyed in solitude or with company? There are merits to both. On the one hand, enjoying nature’s beauty alone allows you to reflect on the day’s events, their context in your life and what promise the following day may hold. On the other, sharing such a moment with a loved one allows you to get lost together and feel as if the rest of the world has ceased to exist. I wonder if Flickr user Andy Bokanev was with anyone when he captured this stunning image at Puget Sound. I wonder if he likes Barry White.

Doesn’t it just make you want to take a ride across the moon, a la Elliott and E.T.?

Today’s photo of the day from kellinasf spawned memories of doll-like extraterrestrials and heart lights. There wasn’t much information about this photo’s location or what time of day it was taken, but it was captivating enough for me to pull it out of the bunch. Admittedly, I spent a few moments of my day reminiscing about flying bikes and scouring the pantry for Reeses Pieces.

People watching is an underappreciated travel pastime. In between sampling local delicacies, seeing the sights and taking countless posed photographs in front of funny street signs, we should all take more time to just observe the people who occupy the places we visit. Flickr user penton42 did just that when he spotted this gentleman in Santiago de Cuba. One is left to contemplate if this young man’s hairstyle is a celebration of his love for the iconic men’s magazine, a commentary on his life as a lothario or just something his barber thought up without ever telling him. Whatever the reason, it’s excellent penmanship.

Traveling – whether by plane, car, boat or train – can be a dramatic experience. This photo of the day, courtesy of feserc, is properly titled “Traveling” and was taken at Ao Phang-Nga National Park in Thailand.

This photos shows that even a still shot can embrace movement, and that travel (despite it’s bad rap for chaos and diversion) can be a peaceful experience.

Taking pictures of food has never been more popular. Nearly everyone I know creates their own “food porn.” Food has become an integral part of our travel stories and photographs. More often than not, we document the strange, extravagant and repulsive things that we ingest. Lost in those extremes are the images of the classics. What I love about this image by Flickr user Paul_Brady (whose tumblr blog is a must-read) is that it’s not showy. It’s not braggadocios. It’s just one man’s simple meal at New York City’s famous Gray’s Papaya (Upper West Side location).

We don’t have to constantly try to impress people with tales of fois gras and deep fried tarantulas. Sometimes, all it takes is a classic to make your friends’ mouths water.
