Photo of the Day (10.3.09)

There’s something awfully distinct about the Spanish colonial architecture — especially walls that enclose cities all over Latin America and the Caribbean. I love the composition of this photo in particular, from the green foreground to the colonial wall that looks out to a stunning sky and what must be the open sea.

Today’s Photo of the Day was taken yesterday in Puerto Rico and comes to us from robertrex365, who just happened to work as a Obama campaign photographer. No wonder this photo is such a stunner!

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Milan-based photographer, il lele. This photo was taken in the city of Fatehpur Sikri, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It’s a great moment captured – and it’s easy to appreciate the simplicity & contrast of the image. Il lele has alot of great portraits and environment shots on Flickr, so take the time to check them out.

Fatehpur Sikri was constructed in 1570, and served as the capital of the Mughal empire until 1585. That year, it abandoned for unknown reasons – but is now regarded as a center of architectural inspiration. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring several important religious and secular buildings.

Having just come from the concrete jungle that is New York City, I’ve come to appreciate the urban landscapes that only large cities can offer. When the sky opens up in bright blue above the towering skyscrapers I have to pinch myself at the great modern progress that the world has made in just a century. There’s something really grand and angular about cities that make them perfect inspiration for photographers.

This particular shot that was taken in Toronto caught my eye because of the great symmetry of the buildings and the cloud positioned perfectly in between. The square shadow on the lower left building adds to its angular appeal, don’t you think?

Today’s Photo of the Day comes to us from bgilbert, a Canadian with a great urban eye. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

The person riding his bike in this swirl of energy is in Basel, Switzerland navigating the city’s rush hour traffic. Photographer jrodmanjr was on his bike as well and expressed amazement that riders could navigate Basel’s rain slick pavement with such finesse.

If you’ve captured images of energy and amazement, send them our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool. Images of stillness capture our fancy as well.

Nothing compares to the sunsets in Asia. At dusk every day you could expect to find me on a patio outside (preferably by the Mekong River), sipping on a local beer, and snapping photo after photo of the red glowing sun. The great thing about this photo is it appears to be naturally sepia-toned — a perfect blend of old with new.

Today’s Photo of the Day comes to us from flicts, who has traveled to such places as Vietnam, Ireland, Kiev, and Tibet. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!
