Photo of the Day (5/9/09)

I’m not sure where these animals are. A zoo? The wild? Which country? Hector G. Lincz who took this shot, doesn’t say. But what a lovely way to capture an image and a mood. When I saw this photo, I was reminded of one of Karen’s techniques for self portraits. This is another way to use a side mirror. Along with the perfect framing, there’s a voyeristic quality I find intriguing. It’s hard to place the car or the viewer. Perhaps this is another way into Narnia?

If you’ve captured an unusual view. Send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool. It might be picked as a Photo of the Day.

What the heck is going on in this picture? Actually, I can tell you. That’s our very own Kent Wien from Cockpit Chronicles and Plane Answers shooting a photo of himself in the airplane lav. Why, you might ask? He’s actually taking part in a social experiment hosted by our resident flight attendant, Heather Poole. In one of her recent posts, Ms. Poole called on the loyal Gadling readers to take (appropriate!) shots of themselves at 30,000 feet.

The resulting gallery, which you can see on Heather’s recent post is a funny/creepy/interesting look into the lives of a small faction of Gadling readers. We love you guys!

I’m a vegetarian, so the sight of these chickens in the window elicited a very strong gurgle from my stomach. Before college, however, I was a meat-eater. I didn’t have my first salad until I was 18. My parents would frequent Chinatown, and I would gawk at the meat in the window in a similar fashion as I am now.

I love Peking duck. I miss the taste of crispy skin with that tangy sauce on a steamed rice bun. When I lived in Beijing one summer during college, I would have Peking duck every weekend. That was the real deal. I miss fresh Chinese meat.

This appetizing (to some) photo comes to us from jerry.r.lem. The steam in this Bostonian Chinatown store window, the triad of colors, and the obscure meat on the right just makes me want to take a stroll in my neighborhood Chinatown and remember the good ‘ole days, when Mom would buy bok choi for less than a dollar, Dad would treat us to dim sum, or I could watch rice noodles being made through the Look Fun window.

Tickets to Germany have been on super sale for the past few weeks, as they normally are this time of the year. The problem is that most budget tickets are into Frankfurt, which hasn’t got a ton of exciting tourist attractions. Luckily, a variety of beautiful cities like Cologne are nearby, where the above picture of the Kölner Dom was taken by rafapdalbem1. Neat shot.

Who said that only landscapes can be considered as “scenery”? Gadling photographer Max Waugh (a.k.a. fiznatty) proves this theory wrong in this beautiful sky shot that he calls “Cloudscape.” He writes, “While stopping to admire the milky blue waters of Lake Pukaki, it was impossible to ignore the funky cloud patterns lingering above. The Central Otago seems like a haven for lenticular clouds, but on this day there were also these long streams of fluffy white. I was noticing hills, peaks and valleys stretching across the sky.”

As Gadling writers Jeremy and Mike continue their “In the Corner of the World” feature detailing their travels through the heart of New Zealand, it seems fitting, that this is my Photo of the Day pick. Though I’ve never been to New Zealand, this photo shows us how it is just as lovely down low as it is up high.
