Photo of the Day – English Class in Vietnam

As we travel the world taking in the sights and sounds, it’s often easy to forget that the people whom we romanticize are just people living their own lives and trying to fulfill their own dreams. Those workers tending rice paddies, artisans weaving tapestries and farmers herding livestock may make for some fanastic stories when we return home, but they all remain where we saw them, taking on each day as it comes. Just like these students in an English class in Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam.

This photo by flickr user pirano shows a classroom filled with students seeking to improve their lives by learning to speak English. Each one of them has their own goals, desires and hopes. Perhaps one of them will make it to New York one day, snap a picture of me commuting and show it off to their friends back home as an example of how we live day-to-day.

Taken any inspiring travel photos? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the day – Amusement park Americana

Everyone loves an amusement park ride, especially one with pretty lights, right? Flickr user ohad* snapped this appealing nighttime image of a local amusement park ride in Delray Beach, Florida. He manages to create an image that captures a reconizable, summery piece of Americana, one especially welcome during these cold winter days. In fact, ohad* took this photograph on New Year’s Eve, but the summery feeling is there nonetheless. We need reminders, here in the frigid Northeastern US, of how it feels to stroll around at night in a t-shirt and jeans.

Got an image of a warm-weather nighttime carnival you’d like to share with the Gadling readership? Upload it to the Gadling pool on Flickr and it might very well end up as a future Photo of the Day.

Photo of the day – Lunch in Serbia

One of the best parts of traveling is indulging in a few vices. The “hey, I’m on vacation!” attitude enables you to order dessert, have a glass of wine with lunch, and not worry about the calories you’re taking in, especially as you figure you’ll burn them off walking around museums or hiking the countryside. This photo by Flickr user eolone in Serbia shows some of the best travel food groups: the sausage group, the fried group, even the “hey, I’m in Europe!” tobacco group. Just switch out the water for a beer and you’d have the perfect guilt-free (for now) vacation meal.

Enjoy any food vices on your last trip? Take a photo for our Gadling Flickr group and it could be our next Photo of the Day!

Photo of the Day: Three friends in El Salvador

No matter where you go in the world, some things are universal. It’s those things that help keep us grounded and comfortable no matter how far from home we may be. For me, I always cherish the smiles on kids’ faces. Kids are almost the same everywhere in the world. Boys are rambunctious and girls like to whisper and giggle. That’s why, even on the streets of El Salvador, you can find comfort in the smiles of two kids just walking by.

What I love even more about this photo from Gadling’s own Stephen Greenwood is that it adds yet another constant to the mix: a puppy. Puppies are cute no matter where you go.

Taken any photos kids with dogs? Or maybe just some fantastic pictures of the people, places and things you’ve encountered on your travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day (1.12.11)

Have you ever caught the absolute perfect view of a place? Be it a city’s shape or a cloud’s roll, have you ever felt like you saw something you wish you could share with the world? Those moments are what I live for. They’re why we travel.

A lot of Latin American cities are similar to San Jose, Costa Rica–at least at night. Many of them climb up hillsides and cast a deep orange glow onto the lingering low clouds after sunset. This shot was captured by photographer, Ben Britz, this past summer.

Atop a high hill in San Jose sits a restaurant from where he got this shot. Equipped with live local music and dancing, this place made for the perfect perch for the perfect shot.
