Photo of the day (12.31.10)

It’s New Year’s Eve, a time to make (and eventually break) resolutions for the incoming year. Time to start exercising, cut down on junk food and alcohol, keep a journal longer than 2 weeks this time, etc. Even us at Gadling have some travel resolutions to keep. These girls on the sands of Tel Aviv, Israel are fitting in some yoga with their day at the beach and it looks like their friend on the left has made a resolution to get in shape as well, or maybe just get a girlfriend. Thanks to Flavio@Flickr for this resolution inspiration and Happy 2011!

See any resolutions in action on your vacation? Submit your photos to the Gadling Flickr pool and we might just choose one as a future Photo of the Day.

Given the past weeks of difficult weather-related travel delays in Europe and North America, it seems appropriate to bring the theme of travel realism to today’s Photo of the Day. Today’s image comes courtesy of Flickr user jwannie: a somewhat blurry waiting area of the Minneapolis St. Paul airport at 5 am. At the hallowed hour of 5 am, airports are full of hardcore business travelers and a handful of leisure-minded folks. Both groups tend to be on blurry-eyed zombie auto-pilot, possibly scarfing the bruised apples that seemed the night before like appropriate potential breakfast snacks.

Got a photo that captures one or another slice of the travel experience in all its glories? Submit it to the Gadling Flickr pool. If we like it, we might just choose it as a future Photo of the Day.

I typically associate images of massive glaciers with the Antarctic, Himilayas, or Alaska; certainly not the south-western Pacific. But believe it or not, today’s stunning Photo of the Day comes from the Franz Josef Glacier on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Sweet as!

The Franz Josef is an impressive 12km long glacier that stretches from the slopes of the South Alps to a temperate rainforest that’s less than 300 metres above sea level. Visitors can day-hike or take a helicopter tour onto the glacier for beautiful views like this one, taken by Flickr user Martin O’Connell.

While it may be hard to take a bad photo with scenery like this, I think the contrast of the ice against the clouds and mountains in the distance makes it an especially engaging photo. Show us your winter wonderland! Upload your best shots to our Flickr pool and it could be our next Photo of the Day.

Well, Americans from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic up through New England are still digging themselves out from this weekend’s delightful little flurry of snow. While some people think that snow is nothing but a nuisance, others relish the chance to play in the white stuff. Snow days aren’t just for kids.

Our very own Gadlinger Darren Murph snapped this photo while snowmobiling in Wyoming. Not a bad way to really plow through the snow. Whether you’re snowmobiling, snowshoeing, building a snowman or camping out in an igloo, make the best of these snow days rather than griping about them.

Taken any snowy photos during your travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

For Santa, Christmas Eve must be a royal pain in the ass. First of all, he obviously has to work at an unreasonable, unfathomable pace. He is also forced to grapple with potentially uncooperative reindeer and salty elves–not to mention children who just won’t go to bed. One imagines that by the time Santa hits Apia he’s ready to jet back to the tundra and hibernate for a good long month.

On top of everything else, Santa has to constantly watch where he’s going, lest he plunge face-first into a building. In this image, taken in Ljubljana by Gadling Flickr pool contributor pirano, he’s done just that.

Got a funny image of Santa? Upload it to the Gadling Flickr pool. If we like it we’ll select is as a future Photo of the Day.
