Photo of the Day (6.23.09)

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from our very own Stephen Greenwood, our newest blogger and resident Hong Kong expert. He’ll be blogging from southeast asia for the next few months in his series Dim Sum Dialogues, absorbing the culture and taking us on a journey through the massive city state. In case you hadn’t figured, he’s a damn good photographer too.

Today’s Photo of the Day is relevant for several reasons. The shot of the tarmac on the way to Paris was taken by Kent Wien, our resident pilot who is actually currently on layover in the middle of a BOS-CDG-BOS turn.

This week is also the week of the 45th Paris Air Show, the massive biannual event that brings thousands of suppliers, manufacturers and press to Le Bourget for updates on all of the new technology. It’s the biggest air show in the world, and both Kent and Grant will running around collecting data for Gadling. Stay tuned later this week for updates from the show.

Oh, and if you’ve got any cool photos that you’d like to share with the world, add them to the Gadling Pool on Flickr and it might be chosen as our Photo of the Day. Make sure you save them under Creative Commons though, otherwise we can’t use them!

Since we have a new blogger coming onto the team soon, my mind has been on Hong Kong a lot (guess where he’s from?). I’ve often referred to the former British colony as “Southeast Asia on training wheels,” where you can experience all of the virtues of the far east yet still enjoy the comforts of the west. Signs in English, easy public transportation, horse racing and plush hotels all contrast with night markets, street food and a strong dollar. What’s not to love?

lecerle snapped this photo at Happy Valley in the north of Hong Kong Island and it makes me miss the country dearly.

What I wouldn’t give to be on a beach right now, watching seagulls drift around and not wearing pants. jrodmanjr actually took this shot on San Francisco (hence the fog) where the beaches may be less tropical but where the scenery is just as gorgeous. The perfect combination of light, shadows and high shutter speed in this photo add to its magnificence. Nice pic, jrodmanjr.

I found myself outside of the Minneapolis – Saint Paul international airport for one of the first times in my life this past weekend, in stark contrast to the dozens of times that I’ve passed through it’s flagellating halls.

It’s actually quite nice. During the spring and summer times, the land of 10,000 lakes boasts myriad picturesque landscapes, including the above shot taken by Patrick Powers over at Flickr. Nice shot, Patrick.
