Photo Of The Day: The Treasury At Petra

“Indiana Jones would be proud,” wrote Instagram user shuotography in the caption for today’s Photo of the Day. Yes, we think he would. Taken at the Treasury in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, this photo was enhanced with Instagram’s “Lo-Fi” filter, which adds shadows and makes colors richer. While no one knows for certain, the Treasury, known in Arabic as al-Khazneh, is believed to have been a temple or royal tomb. Definitely Indiana-esque.Do you have any great adventure travel photos? Photo of the day – Sunset in Manhattan

Sunsets are a common staple of the travel photo album. We tend to associate them with palm-tree-lined beaches, desert landscapes, and misty mountains. Yet this photo by Flickr user jameskadamson has nary a cactus or foothill in sight. Taken in New York City, it’s a beautiful perspective on the building’s architecture and the photographer’s favorite time of day. Want more sunsets? Photo of the day – Stormtroopers in Las Vegas

Have you ever walked down the street and seen something amazing and cursed yourself for not having a camera? Lucky for us, Flickr user mciccone640 had his camera and shot today’s Photo of the Day of couple of robots stormtroopers* in Las Vegas. I wonder if there was a convention in town or if the guys were just wearing costumes for luck in the casinos. Perhaps a theme wedding? Hope they had a lucky night (going to the bathroom couldn’t have been easy), no matter the reason.

*This PotD was originally called Robots in Las Vegas until my husband informed me that they were, in fact, storm troopers and not robots. Sorry. Still can’t be easy for them to go to the bathroom.

One of the quintessential photo ops for Americans traveling abroad is, as far as I’m concerned, a traffic jam caused by some kind of livestock. Sheep, cows, horses, whatever: surely you’ve either taken or seen a photo taken through a windshield, the car’s ceiling and sides framing a shot of a herd of animals moseying across a country road. While it’s not entirely obvious whether or not these giants are holding up traffic, they’re clearly on a road. Flickr user t3mujin captured this scene in Portugal.

Photo of the day (2.3.09)

Here in the Midwest, we’re in the midst of an unholy winter. Record snowfall, wild ice storms and weeks of subfreezing temperatures are starting to weigh heavy at this point, and as we drag ourselves out of the darkness into snowy daily rituals, it’s easy to repeat and repeat the phrase “I really hate winter.”

Only in times of warmth, reflection and patience do we sometimes get to enjoy the beauty that comes along with a fresh snowfall. Naked branches covered with sleeves of white, icicles dangling off rooftops, smooth silent landscapes. It almost makes you think “Maybe I could spend just one more winter here — Right?”

BluePeak‘s photo reminds me of those times. Times where I’ve been on top of a mountain, bundled up in three jackets, warm, comfortable and at peace with winter. If only I could bottle that feeling up and use it every day.
