A Royal Wedding for the rest of us

Royal Wedding

Had just about enough of the Royal Wedding and it has not even happened yet? Didn’t get your invitation in the mail? Maybe you just need to plan your own royal wedding and be done with it. Royal Caribbean International is celebrating the upcoming British royal wedding by offering an exclusive Royal Wedding Package that might be just what you’re looking for.

“Royal Caribbean’s full fleet of ships around the world will broadcast the royal wedding live so that guests may join in the ceremony’s excitement. ” said Betsy O’Rourke, senior vice president of Marketing. “Inspired by the pending royal nuptials, the Royal Wedding package and honeymoon registry offers guests the Royal treatment on their special day and honeymoon cruise”

The Royal Caribbean package offers a wide range of royal wedding stuff like a tiara for the bride, a 12-rose hand-tied bouquet, strawberries and champagne, toasting flutes and a keepsake server each engraved with a crown and dinner at the captains table. Included are the services of a wedding planner and photographer along with a boutonniere for the groom, announcements and a wedding cake.

The price tag? A mere $2904 (well, plus the price of the cruise)

Not bad really when the average real royal wedding with William and Kate along for the ride is coming in at $100 million or so by one estimate.

Prince Harry begins arctic trek

Prince Harry is on an Arctic trek for charityWay back in January we posted a story about the possibility of Britain’s Prince Harry going to the North Pole as part of a fund raising effort for charity. While the prince won’t actually be heading to 90ºN as predicted, he did embark on an Arctic trek this week with a team of disabled veterans from the U.K.

After a number of weather delays, Harry and the rest of his group, were finally able to get underway on Monday. The journey began with a flight from Spitsbergen to the Barneo Ice Camp, a temporary base built on the Arctic Ocean that is annually constructed by a team of Russian paratroopers. After a very brief stay at the station, the group was shuttled off 87ºN, where most of the team began their 200 mile journey to the North Pole.

I say most of the team, because Harry won’t be making that journey with the vets. Instead, he’ll be picked up from the ice in a couple of days. The 25-year old prince was given special leave from his military duties to accompany the squad, but he is due back on base, where he’ll continue his training to become an Apache helicopter pilot. There is also the small matter of a wedding in the family soon as well.

The expedition is being undertaken to raise funds for the Walking with the Wounded foundation. The team hopes to raise as much as $3.2 million for the organization, which is dedicated to helping soldiers injured in military service to recover from their wounds and get on with their lives. Four of the men on the expedition were injured during the war in Afghanistan, with two of those being amputees. Prince Harry serves as a patron for Walking with the Wounded, which made it of utmost importance to him that he get to take part in the trek, even if it was only for a few days.

If all goes as scheduled, the team should arrive at the North Pole around the 25th of the month. Harry will be back in warmer climes by the weekend however.

Prince William and Kate Middleton: Royal Wedding build-up starts in Wales

prince william kate royal weddingPrince William and Kate Middleton made their first official public appearance together today, a milestone in the lead-up to the Royal Wedding on April 29.

The couple visited Trearddur Bay on the island of Anglesey in Wales to dedicate a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat. The lifeboat, it turns out, is the most technologically advanced inshore rescue boat that the RNLI produces.

A crowd of hundreds of excited royals watchers and multiple camera crews saw the couple arrive and perform their duties. Following the lifeboat dedication, William spoke briefly in Welsh. Kate christened the boat and impressed observers by singing the Welsh national anthem.

Though Anglesey is already a popular tourist spot, its profile will surely rise in the near future. The couple currently live on the island and will continue to do so while the prince remains stationed at RAF Valley as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

Royals chasers might want to head quickly to Scotland, where the couple will make another official appearance on Friday. William and Kate will launch the celebration of the 600th Anniversary of their collective alma mater, the University of St. Andrews.
