Three freebie treats on Election Day

After you head to the polls to vote on Tuesday, stop in a Krispe Kreme donut place, a Starbucks or a Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream for a free thanks for voting treat.

As blogger Beth Pinsker wrote on WalletPop, Krispe Kreme doesn’t care who you voted for, but that you voted. If you show up wearing your “I Voted” sticker you’ll get a special star-shaped donut with red, white and blue sprinkles. Some Krispe Kreme places may be handing out the traditional round donut, but with the patriotic sprinkles. This offer is only good on Tuesday, and only one donut per customer.

Starbucks is offering a thank you for voting cup of coffee. I found that out when I was looking up the John McCain/Sarah Palin, aka, Tina Fey video from Saturday Night Live. Here’s a link to the Starbucks ad that is using the election as a way to get people to make the world a better place. I guess coffee helps. It helps me. To get your free tall size cup, go to a Starbucks on the 4th and say you voted.

Ben and Jerry’s is giving out free scoops of ice-cream from 5 to 8 p.m. on the 4th. The free scoops, one scoop per customer are to celebrate democracy. From what I can tell, you don’t need to have voted.

Sarah Palin in a Corn Maze

Sarah Palin is in a corn maze. This does not mean that Sarah Palin is actually in a corn maze, but that there is a corn maze made to look like Sarah Palin. You have to be looking down on the maze and not in it in order to see the likeness. And it does look like her–and also Tina Fey.

I heard about this maze on News Update on Saturday Night Live and promptly checked out the story’s validitity. Yep, the maze is in Whitehouse, Ohio not too far from Toledo. Although the maze of Palin is new this year, The Corn Maze at the Butterfly House where it is located is not new.

Each year the Whitehouse Farm turns acres of corn fields into pictures. There is also an amazing intricate butterfly for wandering among the corn stalks. Corn mazes are one way farmers have upped their revenue in an unsure market. Elaborate pictures are not as common. Palin’s took eight hours to make after an artist made a sketch and figured out how to mow it using a GPS system.

Check out the farm’s Web site for a video of Palin’s maze. You can walk through Palin’s head (sort of a borrowed line from Saturday Night Live) Palin’s addition certainly adds something new to the fall line up of Ohio’s corn mazes.

Here is a YouTube video of a news clip of the Palin corn maze. The owner of the Butterfly House, Duke Wheeler explains how the maze was made and what other fun things his farm has planned.

Need a Laugh? A Humor Triangle in NYC

If the news is getting you down, or if you’d like a big belly laugh, the kind that hurts, New York City is a place you should consider.

It’s one of the biggies in an article on the funniest cities in the U.S. One reason is because of the number of sitcoms that have been situated there–30 Rock being one of the latest. And, of course, there’s the never ending Saturday Night Live. In a way, there’s a comic triangle in New York with NBC being the first stop. Here you can go to tapings of Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O’ Brian and Last Call with Carson Daly. Here’s the NBC Web site link to show you how to get tickets. There are two options. One is a lottery of sorts and the other is showing up the day of taping. If you don’t get to see the actual shows, you can always see where they are filmed by taking an NBC Studio Tour. I took this tour years ago.

Close to NBC studios is Carolines on Broadway. A couple years ago, I went to a fundraiser comedy show here and still think about how sharp and witty the performers were. Caroline’s pulls in top comic entertainment like Darrell Hammond who is on the bill this summer. Plus, the New Talent nights are considered a rites of passage of sorts for new comics on the verge of being discovered. Often, that happens on Carolines on Broadway’s stage.

For another comedy fix, you can also go to a taping of the David Letterman Show at CBS studios. I did get called last summer after putting my name in for tickets, but we weren’t able to go. A friend of mine went this past year by heading to the studio the day of the taping. I did wander into Rupert Jee’s Hello Deli which is often featured on the show. Rupert wasn’t there but I bought my husband a mug and a box of Explod-O-Pop popcorn.
