Amazing Snow Tubing Wipeout!

Recently, Jamie provided a great run-down for us on snow tubing options across the US. The only thing that could’ve made her round-up more complete is if she’d found this hilarious video of the world’s worst (best?) snow tubing wipeout. At only 13 seconds, the video is so incredible that I can virtually guarantee you’ll watch it again. And again.

Just be happy you’re not that guy in the lower right-hand corner…

Snow Brings Travel Misery To US And UK

Everybody knows that the weather in much of the US is really rotten right now. Frigid, icy, and wet, some areas of upstate New York have already topped 100 inches of snow since Sunday — and the end is not in sight. Moreover, at O’Hare, more than 140 flights were canceled this week. The unreal snowfall and airport closures aren’t restricted to the US, however. The UK is getting sacked, too.

Throughout southern England, the Midlands, Wales, and Northern Ireland, heavy snowfall has blanketed the area, and thousands of airline passengers have had their flights delayed or canceled. In fact, at least five airports in the south of England were forced to delay flights and suspend departures this week. Moreover, the region’s train systems have come to a stand-still. The country, apparently, is crippled. According to David Frost, Director-General of the British Chambers of Commerce, “It is expected that the lateness and loss of work hours caused by transport disruptions will cost the British economy up to £400 million… This situation highlights the need for a real change in the current UK travel infrastructure.”

Wow. Not to rub it in, but I’m sitting in shorts and flip-flops on my back porch.

Photo of the Day (1/2/2006)

Here we are in the dead of winter and it is fine time to post a nice Photo of the Day featuring snow. This shot comes from BluePeak and shows a killer snow fall near Vancouver and Whstler, British, Clumbia, arguably the best ski area in North America. Many of us who live in places where Mother Nature has not been so snow-kind, meanwhle, await a snow fall as lovely as this.

Snow days have arrived and in full force for certain areas. In this neighborhood-street shot taken in Vancouver B.C. by borderfilms (Doug) I get the impression no one was in any mood to rush out and take the cars on a snowy spin. Or maybe Doug just couldn’t resist saving the memory of this rare snow dumped day with his Nikon D70 before pulling out the scrapper to remove nature’s wintry blanket. (Sings: “The weather outside is frightful…”)

Certainly not a perfect picture, but this one comes from my road trip files as seen first-hand just outside of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. There was something about the way the ice sat on top of the plants that enchanted me. Obviously I didn’t get many a pleasure or chance to see snow and ice back then, but the times have definitely changed. I’ll be seeing snow, ice and feeling a lot of cold over the next couple of months up here in the northeast, so it probably won’t fancy me as much in another couple of weeks.
