Rock of Ages ‘Vagabond’ luggage tags

Luggage tags normally serve two purposes, but the new Vagabond luggage tags by Rock of Ages serve a third! Most tags help you identify your bag on the carousel and serve as a layer of security in case your bag is ever lost. Rock of Ages’ tags add something no bag tag has achieved before: sass.

As the proud owner of a black Briggs & Riley rollerboard, I can totally see the virtue in adorning my suitcase with a tag like the above. Alternatively, you can go for more colorful options bearing statements like “See You Later Alligator,” “Go in Peace” and “Good Karma – A Bag That Goes Around Comes Around.” Check out the gallery below for the full collection. It’s up to you how much of your personal sass you want to display on your baggage.

Avoid high baggage fees – rent clothes from Zero Baggage

Airline baggage fees just keep going up, and there seems to be no end in sight. With few airlines left that don’t charge for checked bags, travelers who can’t manage to get everything they need into a carry-on bag could end up paying some hefty fees. One Canadian company has come up with a plan to help.

Zero Baggage promises to provide travelers with an “environmentally responsible, anxiety-free way of living and traveling”. How? By renting clothing. Travelers select the clothes they need to rent (either pre-worn or, for more money, brand new), Zero Baggage delivers them upon arrival, and the items are returned when no longer needed. Travelers have access to a wider variety of clothes, at less cost, and without having to pack a larger bag and pay checked-luggage fees.

Or at least, that’s the plan. The company says it will begin offering service in early 2010 in Toronto, Canada and Gold Coast, Australia.

As someone who has, over time, learned to get by with less and now rarely takes more than one carry-on for a trip of 2 weeks, I don’t think I would use the service. And even in an emergency (a fashion emergency), I’d probably just run out and buy something new. But it is an intriguing idea. What do you think?

Daily deal – Tumi yearly clearance sale – up to 50% off

My daily deal for today is for the yearly clearance sale in the Tumi luggage store. Tumi makes some pretty classy (and usually quite expensive) luggage, but it is the kind of stuff that can survive almost any kind of abuse you throw at it.

I’ve been pulling the same Tumi rolling suitcase around the airport since 2000, and while it may look like it’s been to hell and back, it’s still solid as a rock.

Of course, solid as a rock means it comes with a pretty hefty price tag. A “normal” Tumi rolling case will cost between $400 and $750, but the yearly sale event is the one time a year you can pick up some very nice pieces of luggage for as little as $100. Some of the highlights in the sale are the expandable rolling suiter pictured above, or this fantastic hard shell rolling case for just $175.

Expensive luggage is not for everyone, but if you are like me, and you are not very nice to your bags, then it is a great investment in something that will last for many years. The sale lasts till January 31st, but items may start selling out pretty soon.

Daily deal – 5 piece Springfield luggage set at Macy’s for $49.99

We are now a little too close to Christmas to rely on online orders and shipping, so my daily deal for today is available online and instore.

This “Springfield” luggage set is available at Macys.com and most Macy’s retail stores. The set usually retails for $200, but is currently on sale for just $49.99.

Included in the 5 piece set are 3 rolling suitcases, a beauty case/tote and a travel accessories bag.

The set is available in red and blue. The rolling bags feature a full steel frame construction, and all bags are made of high density polyester.

As always with luggage like this, I would not recommend it for the frequent flier, but if you only take the occasional trip, it should work out just fine.

Travelchic.com brings you some chic and some ridiculous accessories

Travelchic.com makes unusual luggage tags, handle wraps, tassels, and key chains, all desgined to make your luggage stand out on the carousel and to show your unique style and flair.

My verdict? Hit or miss. Some of these items are totally hot, and some of them are absolutely ridiculous. If I were chatting you up on the airplane and then saw you claim a bag with a giant furry handle-wrap on it? I would judge you. I’m just that shallow.

The kids’ collection is cute, though I wonder how long those puppy and monkey faces last with the wear and tear of travel, and of course, the sticky hands of the little ones.
