Sick of High Airfares? Bus It

“Greyhound” is considered a curse word in some travel circles. With its share of horror stories, America’s most famous bus line has earned a bit of a bad reputation.

I mean, imagine being stuck in a plane for two hours next to a crying baby or someone who thinks you want to hear their life story. Then imagine similar circumstances on a bus where the travel time is multiplied by ten. Bus travel is not for everybody.

Fortunately, Greyhound and others are offering things that are for everybody: cheap fares and free WiFi. Greyhound has launched a budget service called Boltbus. Its competitor, Coach USA, has also put its budget brand, Megabus, on the roadways.

These buses only offer curbside pick-up, a model begun by so-called Chinatown bus companies. This cuts down on costs associated with maintaining a terminal.

Most of the action is on the East Coast where a battle royale is beginning. Boltbus has been offering $1 fares between some cities and Chinatown carriers and Megabus are primed to respond. The result is that it’s cheap to travel up and down the Atlantic Coast by bus. And it’s a hell of a lot easier to put up with crying babies or talkative passengers when you paying such low fares. Maybe you could spend some of your newly saved dough on a good pair of headphones so you can tune everything out.

Gas pump woes: More than just the price

I just read in this New York Times article that the increasing gas prices in the United States are creating problems at some gas pumps–actually all gas pumps. It’s not because people are throwing themselves on the hood of their cars weeping as the total bill climbs.

I just had a flash of a movie scene. Ben Stiller in the persona of his Something About Mary character–the high school prom guy, cleaning the windshield of his car, weeping–his tears are falling in streams, mixing in with the cleaning solution from the gas station squeegee. Those weird serenaders are in the background singing a gas pump price tag lament.

No, this is not what is happening at the pump. What is happening is that some pumps have pump computers too old to handle the $4 plus a gallon amount. They are stuck at $3.99. As a temporary solution until the new computers arrive, gas station owners are charging half the dollar amount at the pump and doubling the total at the cash register. They have official permission to do so, (There is an application process.) I bet that’s a psychological jolt when someone goes to pay. If you happen to come across an old gas station pump in your travels, this is one situation you might come across.

Another interesting point the article makes is that the modern, computerized machines are breaking down more often because of the speed the pump’s mechanism needs to turn to get higher and higher numbers. The higher the numbers, the faster the numbers turn, so the faster there is a breakdown. This is my understanding.

What is the limit of the new pump computers you may wonder? Just how pricey could gas get if one uses them to project ahead? $9.99. This is like Y-2K, but this time there is a problem. It will take about five months for all the pumps to be updated because of the back log with filling orders.

During the months I spent in Southeast Asia a few years back, Tuk-Tuks were my primary method of transportation — not only were they cheaper than regular taxis, but they were more of a novelty. After all, taxis are everywhere but you’ll only find Tuk Tuks on the other side of the ocean (And for the most part, that’s a good thing–those guys are noisy, smelly and not the best for a winter climate.)

But if Thailand has Tuk Tuks, what, do you suppose, is the vehicle in this photo called? It comes to us from mce323 and was taken in Antioquia, Colombia. Do you know? If not, any guesses?

One for the Road: Transit Maps of the World

There’s a lot of buzz about this new title on the web today and it looks like a goodie. Actually, Catherine already mentioned this book, but I’ve got to salute it again as our travel book suggestion of the day. I mean, Boing Boing calls it sheer subway porn — it deserves more love. Transit Maps of the World: The World’s First Collection of Every Urban Train Map on Earth has a flashy cover that screams fun for fans of public transport systems. I’m definitely in that category — I love conquering subway systems when I visit a new city. There is such a sense of accomplishment in getting from A to B, learning station names and knowing how to navigate yourself through tunnels and tubes, especially when you throw in that added layer of language barrier. And the names of favorite (or most often used) stations always linger: Jianguomen in Beijing, Principe Pio in Madrid, Dupont Circle in DC.

Penguin’s new book claims to be the first and only comprehensive collection of historic and current maps of every rapid-transit system on earth. Whew! Author and transport extraordinaire Mark Ovenden traces the history of mass transit-including rare maps, diagrams, and photographs. I don’t doubt that this book will live up to what the publisher calls “the graphic designer’s new bible, the transport enthusiast’s dream collection, and a coffee-table essential for everyone who’s ever traveled in a city.”

The Future of Transportation in 1968

Tomorrow’s Transportation: New Systems for the Urban Future is a 100 page document submitted to the U.S. Congress by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson.

Among its pages were a myriad of proposals to help curb growing urban problems like traffic congestion while promoting new technology in human transportation. Many of the ideas were good and made it off the drawing board and into cities. Many of the ideas were bad, and thankfully were never introduced. Here are a few that stick out:

The Dial-a-Bus — A cross between your standard bus and taxi, the proposed Dial-a-Bus system allowed individuals to call a service and schedule a bus pick up. Centralized computers would track the location of each bus, how many people were on-board, and the final destinations of each passenger. The closest bus would then be dispatched. This is a great idea, really, and it’s hard to wonder — with the Internet, GPS, and high gas prices — why something like this hasn’t taken off in areas where mass transit systems aren’t already in place.

Personal Rapid Transit — Think of this as a car, but on a track. Just like Disneyland! The Personal Rapid Transit idea proposed a network of rail-guided, private cars, each capable of transporting about what a regular sedan can. The system would be completely automated, with passengers entering in their final destination when entering the vehicle. I think I remember seeing this in some futuristic movie… Total Recall maybe, or Demolition Man. Regardless, it’s too much like a subway, and probably less efficient. While it would be pretty cool to zip around town in one of these, I don’t see any reason why this idea should have been implemented outside of theme parks. Sorry, PRT!

— This is essentially the same as the Personal Rapid Transit system, only the drivers in the Dualmode system can operate the vehicle on or off the track. This is much more appealing to us American drivers, because let’s face it: we all want to be in control; we love the freedom a vehicle offers. So this begs the question: why have a track at all? A few years back there was buzz about an automated highway system that used magnets embedded in the asphalt. Cars with the built-in sensor could jump on the highway and allow the car to drive itself. Whatever happened to that?

Automated Dualmode Bus — Groovy, man. The Automated Dualmode Bus is similar to the Dualmode Vehicle, only it holds more people. The idea behind the bus is on longer runs — between cities, for instance — the bus would operate on a track. On shorter, inner-city runs, the bus could be driven independent from the track. Once again, why have the track at all? This idea tried to combine the city bus with, say, Greyhound — but what’s wrong with having two independent carriers? This would be cool, I guess, but I can see why it was never adopted.

Pallet or Ferry System — To understand the idea of the pallet or ferry system, think of a freight train, where pallets are loaded onto flatbed train cars and ferried across the country. Instead of crates filled with goods, the pallet system loads cars onto a flatbed and shuttles them around town on tracks. Okay, seems straightforward enough. There are a few problems, however. First and foremost, how would you load the cars onto the flatbed? It seems like it would take much longer to wait in line to have your car loaded onto a train than to simply drive to your destination. This would make much more sense on longer trips, of course. Even so, I like this idea; there’s something about a land-based ferry that seems fun, especially if you could get out of your car and walk around on deck as the train made its way across the country.
