Could Twitter and technology make you a target for criminals when you travel?

Canceling mail service, stopping the newspaper, and putting house lights on timers are ways to make it look to a potential burglars as if you’re still home.

Twitter, though, could undo all your careful planning if you agree with Israel Hyman that his Tweets about his travels tipped off a burglar that he was long gone. When Hyman returned home after his vacation, he discovered valuable electronic equipment was missing. His wife thinks it was most probably a random, coincidental act. Hyman leans towards with his theory.

After reading the CNET News article that recounts Hyman’s story and tells about how technology and cyberspace are interacting in a way that makes us more vulnerable to people taking advantage of us when we travel, I’m not so sorry that I have simple little cell phone and that I haven’t hopped on the high tech gadgetry bandwagon.

The details about how Mathew Honan was able to track down a woman he saw taking a photo at the Golden Gate Bridge using her iPhone 3G is a bit alarming. He wrote about how he did traced her on Flickr and Facebook in this article in WIRED. Honan isn’t a creep, just someone checking out the power of the equipment and a person with sleuthing know how.

Still, even with the technology that might tip off strangers to ones whereabouts, stopping the mail, the paper, and hooking up the timer makes sense. Being careful about what you Twitter couldn’t hurt either. On the other hand, why be paranoid?

I was broken into when I was gone on vacation and I’m convinced it was a guy who was a friend of the friend of mine taking care of my apartment. He knew where the key was. Maybe Hyman should think about who he knows who knew he was out of town.

Twitter + Fares = Twares

Twares may not be a word in the dictionary now, but it might be a common word in travel vocabulary soon.

Twares is a noun, and it means you can get special, time-sensitive fare offers from United Airlines if you follow the airlines on Twitter.

A tweet was sent from @UnitedAirlines at around 11:10 a.m. ET on Wednesday to promote a special $63 each-way “Tware” between Washington Reagan National and Chicago O’Hare. The first tware has expired, but United is holding a 10K Twitter follower challenge (it’s at just over 5,000 followers right now). When it reaches that number, another tware might pop up.

It’s time to stop stalling and join Twitter!

Twitter is watching you – and it’s cool

Just Landed – Test Render (4 hrs) from blprnt on Vimeo.

So, you know how you can search for phrases on Twitter? It’s actually a really useful search tool; if you search Star Trek, for example or visit #startrek on hashtags, you get everything from 140 character reviews to links to longer blog posts and articles.

Jer Thorp took the search idea a little bit further — he illustrated it. In the video above, Thorp mined all the data of tweets saying “Just landed in” or “Just arrived in” over 4 hours. Then he made it pretty. Watch the video! Maybe one was you!

What will they think of next?

Virgin America’s Boston launch is today!

Boston‘s day has finally come. At 2:30 this afternoon, the inaugural San Francisco – Boston flight lands, kicking off service from the carrier out of Beantown.

As part of the launch effort, the airline recently launched the Revolution Takes Flight website, where fans can nominate a non profit organization to which Virgin will soon donate a healthy $25,000.

Voting and selection for the winning organization culminate tomorrow evening, at which point Sir Richard Branson is going award the winners at the Liberty Hotel.

Gadling bloggers Grant Martin and Justin Glow will be tweeting onsite and causing the normal ruckus, so make sure to subscribe to our feed to catch any live updates/muses/throwdowns. But keep in mind: Boston is known for its potential to bring out the worst in travel bloggers.

You’ve been warned.
