Smokin’ Potts

Several years ago I read a classic and
hilarious story about a guy who tried to
infiltrate the set of the Leo Dicaprio film The Beach (a much better book than film, by the way).  I was reminded
of the story recently when I came across Rolf Potts’ blog and Web site.
Called Vagabonding, which is also the name of one of Potts books, I discovered that the prolific Mr. Potts was in fact
the author of that story.

So I have since spent some time “vagabonding” around his site and have found it very enjoyable. Potts has a inimitable
sense of humor, and his writing reflects a sharp eye for detail and for the absurd. There are stories here about
countries all through Asia, Europe and the Mid East. Since the word “gadling
actually means “roving vagabond”, I figured it was only logical that I should give props to the site and urge folks to
check it out. There are numerous stories by Potts himself as well as links to many fine stories by others. And if
you’re a travel writer yourself, there are many bits of advice on how to make it in the competitive world of travel
writing.
