A
must read article in Outside
about Retired Navy Commander William “Chip” Beck and his effort to bring the Boy Scouts to Iraq. A Boy Scout myself
(one does not say “former” Boy Scout…one is forever a Boy Scout), I can honestly relate to the guy’s way of thinking,
and he seems entirely qualified for the job, if a bit on the over-zealous side. But you’d have to be to take this
on.
Believing that camping, hiking and earning bomb-diffusing merit badges is the way to win Iraqis hearts, this
former CIA operative’s story is enough to make you want to take the Scout’s Oath (it’s three fingers, right? I always
forget.)
