When you’re little the world is a very large place full of excitement and adventure awaiting your
grubby, sticky, kiddie hands. It’s yours for the taking, but even then it’s still
quite overwhelming and I can remember times in my own childhood as a military brat where change was often too much to
handle. The culture shocks, the new kid on the block, new surroundings and repeated new beginnings all
take a toll on children in both good and bad ways. Luckily most of mine were good.
There’s a great site full of travel stories from the lucky and sometimes unfortunate children who get to travel the
world as young global nomads due to mommy or daddy’s career as a Diplomat. Apparently the daughter of one Foreign
Service officer gathered stories from peers like herself and they can be found at the
US Department of State for Youth. Many of the
youngsters tales on experiences like one day trips in Sinai, Egypt, a bank robbery in El Salvador, and being
a ‘Third Culture Kid’ in Russia are highly worth reading if you have a free moment.
