Thomas Cook Travel Awards

As many folks know, one of the most prestigious awards for travel writing is the
Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. The 2005 winner
will be announced later this year in September, but I thought I’d draw attention to the award and mention the 2004
winner: Ghost Riders is Richard Grant’s book about his travels around the USA. The
nominees list here is a nice place to get some ideas
for further summer reading, should you still be in need some of excellent brain food with a travel twist.

There are some superb books mentioned here, including Michael Moran’s

Beyond the Coral Sea
: Travels in the Old Empires of the South-West Pacific. The book garnered excellent reviews and
covers a region of the world not known to a lot of people. According to one review the book answers “everything you
wanted to know about cannibalism but were afraid to ask.” What could be more interesting than that?
