Here’s one for voting types. Hooked on the Outdoors Magazine is
running feature where you can choose the Outdoor Person of the
Year. They’ll feature the winner and runners up in a future issue of Hooked on the Outdoors, and will donate a $1,000
grant for the cause of their choice. Here’s the criteria:
• Is an accomplished outdoors athlete?
• Gives back to the outdoor community?
• Has overcome adversity in the outdoors?
• Remains selfless in their dedication to the outdoors?
I made my choice and selected Aron Ralston because he nicely fits the criteria above. I know this will rankle some
folks, as several commenters here feel that Ralston is an opportunist and that he was irresponsible, but I consider him
a truly viable athlete, and as he presses ahead with his climbing adventures with just one arm, I remain
impressed.
