So here is one of the more amazing things I’ve seen in a while. A new podlike ship is being buiilt that will allow
passengers to kick back and enjoy their favorite Pinot Grigio as they observe the underwater world around them.
The Trilobis 65 is a circular vessel being built by a company in
Seattle called Underwater Vehicles, Inc. It consists of four levels
connected by a spiral staircase, and the bottom level, a circular capsule with a 360 degree view, sits ten feet below
the water. Powerful lights will illuminate the water around the observation deck, attracting fish and curious divers.
There was an excellent Popular
Mechanics article about the Trilobus from a few years ago, but it looks like they are getting ready to launch the
first one later this year. The company says that special marinas are being constructed to allow a small fleet of these
things to dock together, creating little villages for underwater observation. The price tag is hefty…4-5 million
per…ouch. But hopefully some enterprising, sciency tycoon (Paul Allen, hello?!) will purchase a few and open them to
the hoi polloi.
Very cool.
