Paddlers looking for a little island living might be interested to know that the
Queen Liliuokalani Long Distance Canoe Races, the world’s largest outrigger
canoe race, are coming up soon on September 3 and 4. Canoeing and surfing are the state’s two big sports, though you
probably already knew that.
Surfing is what people do for fun, canoeing is kinda how they used to get around. This
event, though, is supposed to be pretty special, as it is really
about celebrating the long history and culture of the islands. The
races open with a ceremony of chants and blessings and Saturday eve features a torchlight parade where, presumably, if
you did poorly, you’ll be voted off the island. Of course no island event would be complete without a luau, which takes
place on Sunday. Aloha and enjoy.
