Today is the 136th Running of the
Travers Stakes at
Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. George Steinbrenner’s
Bellamy Road will be the one to watch when the race goes off around 6:30 pm.
The day also marks one month since the summer race season kicked off at this 350-acre racetrack in upstate New York.
August is the high season in Saratoga, and it makes a great day trip or weekend getaway destination.
Racing season ends on Labor Day, but there are plenty of other things to do in the area. This weekend you can catch
Journey or Avril Lavigne in concert at SPAC (the rest of the season’s schedule is
here), or visit anytime this fall and choose from a long
list of activities. Some ideas to get you started: attend the
Food & Wine Festival, plan a
picnic, tour Yaddo Gardens or the
Canfield Casino and my personal favorite thing to do,
have a tall cold beer and play some darts at the Parting Glass
downtown.
