Art of the Himalayas

Here’s another exhibit, in fact — an entire museum — that New Yorkers can visit to view artistic gems from a sacred
corner of our world. The Rubin Museum of Art, which opened in the fall of
2004, showcases all aspects of Himalayan art, and beginning tomorrow, will feature the photography of Janet E.
Wulsin.

Janet traveled through Tibet, China and Mongolia from 1921 – 1925, one of the first American explorers to reach
western China. Vanished Kingdoms features a collection of
photos and letters from her expeditions, including a 1923 trek for National Geographic. There is a photo/travelogue

book
too, published by Janet’s daughter in 2003. The exhibit runs through January 22.

If you do head to the RMA this weekend, don’t miss the US premiere of Ella Maillart’s 1939 film
Nomades
Afghan
, showing at 4 pm on Saturday. And another current exhibit running through January,
Female Buddhas, Women of Enlightenment in Himalayan Art,
highlights popular feminine goddesses and deities worshiped in the region.
