Here’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for the adventuresome: American tourists will have the opportunity to attend
a mass sports festival (AKA: weird cultish display of fascistic robotic human activity) in the North Korean capitol of
Pyongyang.
A travel agency in Beijing called Koryo Tours, which is run by two Brits, was
approved to take visitors, Americans included, to the Arirang festival, an Orwellian stadium scene that takes place in
early and mid-November. Here’s an account
of the event from a few years ago in the Guardian. In all honesty, I think it sounds pretty cool. I’d go if I
could.
This is the third time that American citizens have been allowed into North Korea…they were also allowed in 1995 and
2002. To get there (the cost is about $1900) you have to fly to Pyongyang from Beijing.
