The Iberian peninsula and parts of Africa are in direct path of an
unusual solar eclipse occurring today.
The best spot for viewing (with proper eye protection) is Madrid, where the moon will cross directly in front of the
sun.
El Pais has a multimedia site to mark the
three-and-a-half hour long event, which will showcase a burning ring of sun around the moon. The strongest point will
be when the path passes over Sudan and Kenya. Places in other parts of Africa, Europe and India will see only a
partial eclipse.
As I was reading up on this, I found another niche tour to consider if you’re really into sky spectacles.
Missouri-based Astronomical Tours is running an
Annular Eclipse Tour in Spain for today’s event, and
they do this a few times every year all over the world, wherever these happenings occur. They already have waiting
lists for solar eclipse trips in the Mediterranean next spring, and have another one slated for Niger.
