Donghai Bridge

I’ve been keeping a close eye on Shanghai these days because there is a very good chance I’ll be spending some time
there before 2006 ends. Yesterday, I learned about the amazing “S” shaped

Donghai Bridge
, that spans 32.5 kilometers from Luchao Harbor to the
Yangshan Deep Water Port in the East China Sea, a much
needed expanded industrial area that officials hope can also be developed to attract tourists and visitors.

The curved shape of the bridge is designed to support a safer ride. When the bridge opens before the end of this year,
motorists will be allowed to drive up to 80 kilometers an hour on six lanes, a trip that could last as long as 30
minutes. I can only imagine how cool it will be to drive suspended above water for that long…it’s an impressive
engineering feat.
