Gaza Tourism: The Oil of Palestine

The airport does not operate, alcohol is forbidden and the city is cluttered with rubble from bombs. But Gaza’s
tourism director has a vision for the future, and he’s beginning to take small steps towards what he hopes will be a
thriving economic revenue source one day.

This Baltimore Sun
article
elaborates on the current non-existent tourism industry in the battered region, which must become stable
and peaceful for its own inhabitants first, before others can ever be welcomed in large numbers. And that is exactly
the strategy the tourism department will take first,
encouraging Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza to appreciate the historic landmarks and beautiful coastline of
the area. There are ancient mosques and churches, important archeological sites and Mediterranean beach resorts with
inexpensive rates for seaside views. But there is also so much that needs to be done to make all of this attractive to
the outside world. It’s encouraging to read about some folks inspired with hope and determination to make it
happen.
