The British term gap year is more
commonly used outside the states, but travelers worldwide understand it to refer to the tradition of taking a year off
after high school before beginning university. During that gap of time outside the classroom, students usually travel
’round the world, or participate in a working or volunteer vacation someplace away from their home.
There has been a trend in gap year offerings for the 25+ age group, sometimes called “career gap” years. One British
company is about to introduce formal gap getaways for big kids too. Camps International is
rolling out gap adventures for grownups. Officially
called Camp Kenya Life, or CK Life, the series of
programs gives adults the opportunity to have an
immersion life experience with a community in need, and offers add-on safari or beach resort holidays. CK Life will be
offered beginning in November 2005, with 14, 21 and 30 day travel opportunities.
