Greenland has always ranked fairly low on my never ending list of places to visit, but after reading
this piece found in USA Today a few days back, I’m moving it
up a couple notches. Icebergs, glaciers, midnight sun, reindeer and oxen certainly haven’t been included
in my past travels so it may be worth saving for the journey. The country is pretty expensive to
travel to and even around the country. The lack of roads to connect neighboring towns and settlements makes it
slightly difficult to travel within unless going by plane, helicopter or dogsled. Is worth all the trouble? Of
course.
Those worried about the amount of activity, accommodation, food, and civilization should fear not. Catch a
dogsled ride in the country’s third-largest town, Ilulissat, where man’s best friend outnumbers the 4,400
residents. A quick look at the culture and traditional Inuit drum dances can best be seen in Kulusuk, a small town of
only 230 people. Nuuk, the country’s capital houses the National Museum where well preserved mummies of Inuits and
other several artifacts are displayed. When you’re finally ready to rest your limbs, choose from a steel igloo at the
Arctic Hotel, a real igloo, youth hostel, or camp out in the wilderness. As you can tell the options are almost
endless.
USA Today really sells the country as the next big trip you may want to consider taking. Several notes and links can
also be found in the article to answer any additional questions. One travel tip I found
quite interesting was the need to pack mosquito repellent. With it being so cold I never would have thought
mosquitos existed on the island.
