On the Cheap and Grungy Carter Hotel

You get what you pay for. That’s the moral of this
really entertaining story in the Times about
the Carter Hotel on 43rd Street. The hotel charges a mere (mere???!) $100 a night for a location smack dab in the heart
of Times Square (in fact, the hotel is across the street from the Times building itself. You can actually see the
little Times lamps in the photo, so the writer didn’t have to go far to get the story). The rooms of the Carter often
smell of mildew, smoke and much worse odors. There are bugs in the rooms, and the lobby, due to the legions of foreign
travelers who come to the Carter because of the low price rooms, often seems like a Third World bus station.
