It was over a year ago that I was there, but Bombay was an assault
on the senses. An intense bombardment of stimuli on my brain. When I was there, I immediately thought to myself that
you could write a great book about the place. Like Bangkok, I thought, the changes happening here are all about
transition, people in the throes of change. Well< I can’t say for certain that that book has been written, but I was
pleased to see the arrival of the book Maximum
City: Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta.
The author comes from the city and returns with his wife and children after 21 years in the US. He talks about how
the city has changed. The newly minted BMWs that weren’t there. The sprawling poverty that always has been there. Seems
like a good read about a place (India) that I suggest we will all be hearing much more from.
