I learned about today’s book suggestion in the recently released
100 Notable Books of the Year in the New York Times. In Theater of Fish,
Travels Through Newfoundland and Labrador, author John Gimlette explores a land and its people, but also follows in
the footsteps of his own great-grandfather, Dr. Elliot Curwen, who traveled through the region in the late
1800’s as a medical missionary. The book is praised as a mostly lighthearted account of Gimlette’s observations of the
odd and outlandish of this far-flung and fascinating region of Canada. He divides the book into acts and scenes as a
way to organize the drama that unfolds on his journey.
