Maybe you’re looking for more than just a beach chair or ski
slope? Are you longing for an educational escape? One that will get you thinking about our world in a whole different
way? Sometimes a transformational experience far away can bring new direction to your life back home. World Hum
pointed us to these
unique educational opportunities sponsored by Global
Exchange a few weeks ago, and we thought we’d recommend two of their December “Reality Tours” as part of our
December Destination suggestions. However, [disclaimer!] these tours are probably already booked for 2005, and are only
offered here as examples. Inquire with the company if any last minute openings exist, or sign up for one of their 2006
tours.]
Fair Harvest Exchange Program in Nicaragua
Harvesters live with a cooperative member family and work with the farmers to harvest coffee. This is not intended to
be a tour or tourist visit, but rather to be a lived experience that will motivate participants to be committed
activists when they return.
This trip offers a unique perspective on the popular New Year’s Eve festivities in Rio. Tour hosts connect visitors to
the communities, organizations, and people who are tackling the extreme social disparities that exist in Brazil.
Participants will see the real Rio that exists beyond the resorts, by meeting with community organizations working for
peace and justice, and to sustain Brazil’s universal health care system for HIV patients.
