It has long long been a dream to visit Egypt. I’ve dived the Red Sea and seen a bit of the Sinai, but there is
something about riding the Nile, perhaps by kayak!, and exploring the catacombs of a five-thousand year old
civilization really awakens the Indian Jones in me. Among the great sites to see in Egypt (after the Pyramids and the
Sphinx, of course) is the temple of Luxor. So I was interested to see that the good old Seattle Times, which rarely
seems to venture out into the world much these days,
has a fine piece on Luxor.
Of course, it’s written by Bill Dietrich, the editor, so I suppose it makes sense. The old “editor goes on extravagant
trip writes about it” thing. That said, it is a fine piece, and delves into both the deep history of the place and
provides details on how to get aboard tours and how to make your way around the country. Given that he was on a tour,
however, and that it seemed like a big of a fogey expedition, you may not want to take much advice here to heart. It is
always best, IMHO, to just kind of arrive at a place and hoof it around. But that’s just me.
