Today we tip our hats and give heart-felt pats on the back to all the volunteers stateside and
internationally who during the course of the year have helped rebuild homes, tutored
at-risk youth, or educate developing countries on AIDS. Thanks to i-to-i who points out some
astounding volunteers of their own,
we’re able to applaud all of those in the world who have taken the time to give back. No matter how big or small
the effort may have been, volunteering is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding experiences one can encounter in
life.
Use this day to celebrate acts of giving and kindness or to plan a volunteer vacation of your own.
i-to-i is a great organization to
start with offering projects in areas such as teaching, sports, marketing, media, and community development.
Others which we have mentioned over the year here at Gadling include the following:
-
Head out with Earthwatch and dig for bones in the
Gobi Desert or fix filtration systems in India. Erik mentioned this awhile back and also notes the trips as being
pretty pricey. -
Kelly pointed us to an amazing issue of Transitions Abroad dedicated
to volunteer vacations in a September/October special edition. I’m sure the issue can be back ordered and offers
tips on
making the most of volunteer vacations in addition to several trips. -
My personal favorite - Habitat for Humanity International.
Happy International Volunteer Day!
