If you can’t get enough of the cold, here’s another winter festival you
might want to consider: The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival in
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada runs from February 23-26, 2006. It’s considered the Carnival of the great
white north. The event includes a fiddlers’ show, costume contests, a military air show, a snow sculpture
challenge and a variety of stamina competitions like flour packing, axe-throwing, chainsaw chucking and
“smooshing” — which involves teams of five people racing with 2-by-4s strapped to their feet. The festival is
sponsored in part by Yukon Quest, the 1,000 mile sled dog race that goes
from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon in the weeks before the festival. The race begins Feb. 11, 2006 in
Fairbanks.
