Transit Strike day One

I figured since I was in the heart of this whole
transit strike thing, I’d do a post or two over the day about what’s going on…a bloggers eye
perspective that you are likely to get lots of other places as well, since there are, I think, more blogger per capita
in New York City than anywhere else.

So far, the oddest thing I have to report is how amazingly barren
the streets are. I was up early this morning to get some blogging done and headed out at around 8:30 to walk to work. I
work about 30 blocks away from my apartment, and figured I could use the exercise. It’s cold out, but that’s
not too far to walk, I figure. Anyway, lots of bikes on the road, but more than that, there are amazingly few cars. This
seems strange. I know that there is a prohibition about coming into the city in cars that have fewer than four people in
them, but I didn’t figure that would cut down on traffic as much as it has. Weird. Also, given the fact that cabs
must pick up several riders at once, it is funny to see cabs packed with people, most of whom don’t know each
other and must ride together for potentially long stretches. I’d love to hear some of the conversations that go
on…most of them probably complaining, but I’ll bet some dates are made, romances ignited, perhaps a few
fights.

Anyway, still making my way to work. I wanted to stop by the kayak place at Chelsea Piers to see
if anyone was paddling to work. Might make a good story.
