Instead of exchanging loads of gifts this year, my family and
I decided to pool our funds and purchase tickets to a Broadway show in Manhattan. We had an early lunch in the theater
district and then caught Fiddler on the Roof at the Minskoff Theater in
Times Square. Fiddler did not make this list of the top Broadway and Off-Broadway
shows of 2005, but it was still quite an enjoyable performance. Harvey Fierstein was excellent, and we all enjoyed the
singing and dancing to varying degrees, but were unimpressed with Rosie O’Donnell as Golde. Still, it was a great time,
and a perfect way to spend an afternoon in NYC during the holidays. And…the best part — since today was an official
federal holiday, meters were not in service and parking on the street was a piece of cake…plus, there was no traffic
driving in and out of the city. Thank goodness that transit strike was only three days. Times Square was mobbed of
course, but nothing the six of us couldn’t manage as we weaved our way to Rockefeller Plaza after the show to see the
tree. Spontaneously buying last-minute half-price tickets through TDF is really the way to see a Broadway show, but we had to schedule
this ahead of time because of holiday travel plans. No visit to NYC is truly complete without a stop on Broadway.
