With the transit strike having
recently taken place in NY, some curious minds, perhaps those heading to some far off destination may be wondering about
the transit situation in other parts of the globe. Are the drivers being treated well? Are they getting paid enough? Are
they deranged? Are they going to take me on the scenic route and rob me of my pocket change? I’d be lying if I didn’t
say these questions didn’t tumble around my own mind on a cab ride or two. The most recent being on a ride from
LaGuardia International Airport to the Bronx. Right about now all this means nothing though. I made it to my final
destination, the strike has come to an end and a 50 some year old resident of Sydney blogs about his experiences as a cab driver.
Before Adrian Neylan became a cab
driver he was a draftsman, survey technician, landscaper, and groundsman. When he isn’t hauling good residents and
drunk tourists around in his work vehicle he is busy keeping the world in tune with the daily happenings and stories of
passengers of all sorts. He even shares a story about the worst fare he’s ever received. It was supposed to be submitted
to the Sydney Morning Herald in response to submissions they were requesting on ‘worst taxi experience.’ And let
me just say this, it stinks of vomit. Neylan did an excellent job of making this horrific taxi tale come to life.
Almost too good.
The moral of all this: Be good to your drivers and they will be good to you. Be it NY,
Tokyo, London, Paris or Sydney – cab drivers need love too.
