Getting Over Aviophobia

With less than 24 hours separating us from a brand new year it’s time to plan the small and BIG changes that we’ll overcome in the months to follow. Perhaps there
are some of you who are active beach goers and wouldn’t mind shedding a couple of holiday pounds. Maybe there are even
a couple of you who come to Gadling only to read and dream about flying to Paris, but will never step foot on the plane
to get you there. Now I don’t want this to come off as peer pressure, but isn’t it time we conquered our deepest fears
of flying to explore that great big world out there? Huh, huh? My best friend hates flying and there isn’t much I can
do to change her thoughts about being up in the air. Planes should be avoided by all cost in her book. However I’m
determined to shake her and all the other day dreaming aviophobs out of this one. The only qualifications I have in
doing such are a far stretch from any PhD. For starters I have a nice collection of photographs from past travels of my
own (I’ll bore you with those later) and this piece
here from Associated Content
.

Sandra Bell offers three treatment measures to help one snap out of this
fear of flying. The first is systematic desensitization, followed by cognitive therapy and the last being drugs, I mean
medication. Some therapists will frown down upon medications thinking one should be able to control their anxiety
attacks by reversing thoughts of going crazy into thoughts of being calm and in control. Systematic desensitization
teaches one to inhale and exhale and relax the muscles. In other words, stay calm and enjoy the ride. And in any case,
if this made your list of resolutions for the New Year, check out the piece or pass it on to your buddy that’s afraid
to fly and let’s get ready to explore some awesome destinations!

Cheers!
